Louvre Abu Dhabi – History Created

Art is not a word it is an abstract, a feeling, that most feel too strongly about.

Abu Dhabi is the cultural city of UAE and has done something in the art world that no one else has been able to do. They brought the “Louvre” outside France in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first museum of its kind in the Arab world. After ten whole years of sweat and blood, it is a dream finally coming true for Abu Dhabi. Louvre Abu Dhabi is a museum that focuses on shared human stories across many different civilizations and cultures, from the age when humanity seemed to begin until now, the age of technology.

Getting a tour from the master himself, Architect Jean Nouvel, was a wonderful experience. Every piece in this magnificent structure has a significance and a story.  It would take more than 10 years to completely explain  the story behind every piece in the design of the entire museum. Listening to Jean Nouvel speak about the museum like it is his own baby right under the 180-metre dome, was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

This dome looks like it is hanging in the air, but in reality it is held by 4 invisible pillars. When you visit this place, try to find these pillars! Please note there are no windows or glasses on the dome, just the net to prevent birds from entering. The natural light reflects the mirrors off the trees and forms shapes that look like reflection of stars on the walls and floor.

Visitors can “walk the promenades overlooking the sea beneath the dome as the sunlight filters through, creating a moving ‘rain of light’, reminiscent of the overlapping palm trees in the UAE’s oases and traditional souqs.”

This unique dome that you see in all photos (PS: Photos don’t justify the real life beauty and vibe you get when you are present right there) comprises of almost 8,000 unique metal stars set in a complex geometric pattern, designed using the same mechanics of the wind tower (an ancient mechanism used by Arabs to cool the indoor temperatures from the scorching desert heat) which keeps the space under the dome a lot cooler.

Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first of the future Saadiyat Cultural District museum. It is a collection of 300 loans from Musée du Louvre and 12 leading French partner museums. Together, they will tell a universal story of art from pre-history showcasing archaeological findings to contemporary times with installations of established regional artists.

Louvre Abu Dhabi includes galleries, exhibitions, a Children’s Museum for younger audience, a research centre, a restaurant, a boutique and a café. Below is a shot of the Children’s museum with an outstanding technology where children can create replica of the pieces on screens.
